A few of years ago, I started to get the impression that Limousin was more than just magnificent porcelain and excellent meat (the veal from Limousin is famed all throughout France), but I wasn't really sure. I was driving across the country when I decided to detour and spend some time in Limoges, which is the county seat of that area. I had heard wonderful things about this railway station, so I decided to check it out for myself. It was incredible: a palace built out of pale stone, with a massive dome covered with stained glass work done by Francis Chigot, the renowned glass worker of Limousin. Underneath that imposing dome stood a grouping of four sculpted ladies, each of whom represented a different province of France. The figure of Le Limousin was shown with one hand grasping a vase that was meant to symbolize Limoges' world-famous porcelain, while the other hand was extended upward toward a canopy of wheat and chestnuts. It's not typical for the railway stations in the French countryside to look like this, at least not the ones I've seen. As I stood there in awe of the breathtaking scenery, I got the distinct impression that there was far more to this area than I had first believed.
