Welcome to Gentlemanly Elegance – The art of being both fine and dandy. Sebastian Horsley once said that ‘being a dandy is a condition rather than a profession. It is a defense against suffering and a celebration of life‘. This blog is designed to be a celebration of life. Charles Baudelaire advised that ‘contrary to what many thoughtless people seem to believe, dandyism is not even an excessive delight in clothes and material elegance. For the perfect dandy, these things are no more than the symbol of the aristocratic superiority of his mind.’ This blog is designed to showcase this aristocratic superiority of the mind. Thomas Carlyle defined a dandy as ‘a clothes-wearing Man, a Man whose trade, office and existence consists in the wearing of clothes.’ This blog is designed for clothes-wearing men. I created this blog as a haven for fellow Aesthetes, a place where gentlemen of taste could gather to rail against the humdrum, discuss the finer things in life and celebrate elegance in all its forms. I also created this blog as a place for those taking their first steps in celebrating their own taste, or learning to appreciate elegance; to read more and learn more about the noble condition of Dandyism.
