Jewellery Wear, Care & Cleaning Instructions

Category: Shopping

A thorough guide for customers with regards to jewellery care. We address the following topics in this blog article; Wearing Instructions, Cleaning Your Jewellery, Storing Your Jewellery & Annual Service. It is extremely important to take utmost care of your jewellery as it will last forever! Wearing Instructions We recommend that customers remove jewellery before going to bed or participating in physical activity. Exposure to certain harsh chemicals or environments will result in compromising the integrity of your jewellery. This includes, but is not limited to the following: perspiration, perfumes, cleaning agents, chlorine, salt water, and silver polish. Cleaning Your Jewellery Pour a small amount of mild soap into lukewarm water and use a small, soft toothbrush to clean your jewellery. Toothbrushes are ideal for cleaning jewellery with intricate details, which can otherwise be difficult to clean. If the dirt is hard to remove, soak the jewellery in clean water. This particular cleaning method should not be used to clean jewellery with pearls or items made from a thread based string, such as a beaded necklace or bracelet. To clean pearls and thread based beaded jewellery, please use a soft cloth and polish gently. A silver-polishing cloth is a great tool to make your sterling silver jewellery shine again if the pieces have become dull. However, it will not remove scratches. Silver-polishing cloths may be purchased from Gemsouk or your local goldsmith. Gemsouk is happy to offer jewellery-cleaning services tailored especially for your products, please contact us for more information. Storing Your Jewellery Jewellery should be stored away from natural sunlight and heat, in a protective (lined) jewellery box or a tarnish-resistant pouch. It can also be stored in a plastic zip lock bag made of mylar or polyethylene. Never use polyvinyl plastic bags, such as trash can liners as they contain sulfur compounds, or rubber containers, which will make sterling silver tarnish faster and possibly turn black. Do not store your jewellery in the bathroom. Please note that our Gemsouk gift boxes are not made for long-term storage as they are not airtight and tarnishing will occur over time. Annual Service Gold and silver are soft metals and become worn with use. This is true for all genuine jewellery. Depending on the degree of use, we advise you to bring in your jewellery annually for cleaning, service & inspection. In particular, it is important that clasps, mounts, and soldering are checked. Do not hesitate to ask for advice, our specialised jewellery advisory team are at your disposal to guide you and answer your questions.
