    Montessori Materials and Their Basic Functions

    Sensory Materials The equipment for education and flourishing the senses have these attributes: Control of error. Materials are designed so that children can see whether they made a mistake. Isolation of a single quality. Materials are designed so that other variables are held constant except for the isolated quality or qualities. Active involvement. Materials encourage active involvement rather than the more passive process of looking. Attractiveness. Materials are pleasing, with colors and measurements that appeal to children. Olfactory materials have several objectives: To train children’s senses to focus on an evident, particular quality. For case, with the red rods, the aspect is length; with the tower cubes, size; and with the bells, melodic pitch. To benefit sharpen children’s powers of inspection and visual bias as readiness for learning to read. To raise children’s capacity to understand, a method that depends on the ability to distinguish, classify, and organize. To prepare children for the occurrence of the sensitive periods for writing and reading. In this view, all practices are initial steps in the writing-reading course. The third area of Montessori materials is more intellectual. Lessons are conferred in a series that boosts writing sooner reading. Reading is therefore a projection of writing. Montessori believed that many children were ready for writing at age of 4. As a consequence, children who enter a Montessori scheme at age three have finished most of the sensory lessons by the time they are 4. It is not surprising to see four- and five-year olds in a Montessori classroom writing and reading. Below are examples of Montessori materials that boost writing and reading: Ten geometric forms and colored pencils. These propose children to the coordination essential for writing. After choosing a geometric inset, children draw it on paper and fill in the outline with a colored pencil of their choosing. Sandpaper letters. Each letter of the alphabet is outlined in sandpaper on a card. Children notice the body, feel the model, and hear the sound of the letter, which the teacher repeats when announcing it. Movable alphabet with individual letters. Children grasp to gather familiar words. Command cards. These are a set of cards with a single action word printed on them.
